Day 6 – Benedore River Camp to Seal Ck Camp

Soon after leaving camp we hit a section of flooded track. Monika charges straight in with the confidence of somebody whose shoes will be dry in an hour. I follow, the chilly water coming up to my knees and flowing into my boots, cold wrapping around my toes. I immediately wish I’d taken up her offer of stopping to change footwear for that section. Despite the many water crossings and surprise waves, I’ve managed to keep my feet dry until now.

The day’s walking takes us inland through coastal heath, on an old but clear vehicle track that makes walking very easy. After several kilometres we drop packs and take a side track that winds through eucalypt forest to a small mechanised lighthouse atop Little Rame Head for lunch. Daniel and Dave amuse themselves by believing they’re spotting whales that aren’t there.

Back at the junction, we don packs once more and follow the vehicle track down to Seal Creek. A decently sheltered little beach. Fetching drinking water requires a short scrub bash, and the water is pretty dismal. I’m glad my preferred treatment method is filtration, and not just tablets. I don’t like chunks in my water.

We have another beach campfire as the sun goes down. I pull out the packet of Tim Tams I’ve been carrying all this way and share it around. The light of the lighthouse flashes over the horizon.
