Rod’s plan for the day was to head for the crossing of Big River, while I would take the side road towards an upstream crossing of the same river and do Mount Bogong tomorrow.

And then it started pissing down; cold, hard and sideways. We were both pretty wet before long, and getting cold, so we decided to head for Roper’s Hut.

We got the fire roaring despite a general dearth of dry timber.

By 1:30 we were settled in, drying out, and utterly bored. We started going through our food bags, eating for something to do. The rain continued to drizzle heavily outside with little sign of abating.
We had visitors throughout the afternoon, first a group of guys who stopped for lunch, then a pair of brothers who had just done Bogong and came in drenched. The weather refused to clear. Food was cooked, shared and compared.

I still don’t know if I’ll attempt Bogong tomorrow. I imagine it will largely depend on the morning’s weather.
